Saving in Sodom & Gomorrah

In the slums of Accra, Ghana, no one has an easy life. But head porters, like the ones in Old Fadama, a notorious neighborhood nicknamed Sodom and Gomorrah, have it more difficult than most. They begin work long before sunrise and carry thousands of pounds each day in pans balanced on their heads. The head porters, mostly young women from outlying rural areas, are vulnerable to assault, robbery and rape. However, members of the community and formed a savings association, which is now providing head porters some financial stability and a path to a better future.
